Making the Most of a Challenging Spring: The Case for Seed Treatments

This spring has been anything but easy. Cool temperatures and wet soils have stretched across growing regions, and those conditions can take a real toll on early crop establishment. It’s a good reminder of why seed treatments are a valuable part of the toolkit when spring doesn’t cooperate.

Why Cool, Wet Soils Create Extra Risk

When soils are cold and saturated, seeds face a few challenges at once. Germination slows, nutrient uptake is limited, and soil-borne pathogens like Rhizoctonia and Pythium — which thrive in wet conditions — have an easier time attacking vulnerable seedlings. The result can be poor emergence, uneven stands, and root rot that sets a crop back right from the start.

How Seed Treatments Help

A quality seed treatment combines fungicide and insecticide protection directly on the seed, giving seedlings a layer of defence during those critical first weeks in the ground. Fungicide components target the pathogens most likely to cause problems in cold, wet conditions, reducing the risk of damping-off and root rot. Insecticide components protect against early-season pests that can compound the damage.

Many modern treatments also include biological components or growth enhancers that support early root development — helpful when soils aren’t yet providing nutrients efficiently. The goal is a more uniform, resilient stand that can maintain momentum and recover quickly once conditions improve.

Setting Up the Season

Seed treatments aren’t a silver bullet, but in a spring like this one, they can make a meaningful difference in how well a crop establishes. Strong, even emergence early in the season gives a crop more flexibility to perform well later on — even when early conditions have been tough.
