Early Weed Control Sets the Foundation For Yield

In Saskatchewan, getting on top of weeds early is one of the most effective things a grower can do to protect yield and crop quality. Weeds that emerge alongside a young crop compete directly for moisture, nutrients, and light at exactly the stage when the crop is most vulnerable.
Why Timing Matters So Much
Fast-germinating weeds like wild oats, kochia, and lamb’s quarters can establish quickly and begin drawing down soil moisture before the crop has had a chance to properly root. Even light early-season weed pressure can reduce tillering in cereals, limit branching in canola, and restrict yield potential for the rest of the season.
Saskatchewan’s growing season is short. Unlike longer-season environments, crops here often don’t have the time or the growing degree days to fully recover from early stress. That makes the early window for weed control especially important.

Pre-Emergent and Early In-Crop Control
Pre-emergent herbicide applications — applied before or shortly after seeding — are a proven way to reduce early weed pressure and give crops a cleaner start. When pre-emergent timing is missed or conditions don’t allow for it, early in-crop spraying decisions become critical. In pulse crops especially, the difference between a clean field and one overrun with weeds like wild mustard can come down to how quickly an in-crop application is made once the crop is at the right stage.
The right product and timing depend on the crop, the weed spectrum present, and the conditions in each field. Your agronomist can help identify the best approach for your rotation.
Resistance: A Long-Term Consideration
Weed resistance is a growing challenge across Saskatchewan, particularly with wild oats and kochia. Every time a weed population sets seed, there is an opportunity for resistant plants to pass on their genetics. Keeping fields clean during early growth stages isn’t just about this year’s yield — it’s a long-term investment in keeping future control options viable.
Early, effective weed control is one of the most cost-effective agronomic decisions a grower can make. Talk to your agronomist about the
